The Pledwick is less than a mile from Newmillerdam in Wakefield and we thought we’d give it a go on Friday lunchtime having heard that it had undergone a refurbishment.

When you go inside, the interior has been nicely decorated, and has obviously had a fair bit of money spent on it. However, that was to be the only good point of our visit.
PHOTOS: Oven roasted Camembert £8.95
We opted for the sharing starter of “Oven roasted Camembert (for sharing), caramalised onions, bread platter. The camembert was cold on the outside (presumably from being microwaved for not quite long enough) so we sent it back. There were no caramelised onions, and the sliced bread that came with it could have done with being toasted and a bit grander to be called a platter!
One of the frustrating things was, it was sold as a sharing dish, but the food was put down in front of me rather than in the middle of the table.

Overcooked. That’s putting it simply. The peas were really not nice and didn’t have much flavour at all. The chips were disappointing, so well done and unpleasant to eat.
The service…. I ordered a drink, it didn’t come, I queried where the drink was a few minutes later after others around had received their drinks. I was told that the bar man was new and they apologised for the delay. On the way out, we asked for a VAT receipt – only for the ‘new’ bar man to explain to the other one how to get the till to print VAT receipts!
I wasn’t impressed with the meal, or the service. I wouldn’t go back!
November 2012 – I understand The Pledwick is closed and looking for new owners.
January 2014 – The Pledwick has been under new ownership since February 2013.
