Steak, Chimichurri & Salads – Argentina [World Cup Food Challenge]

Ahhhh, what to cook for Argentina….. ‘Asado’! (barbecue!)

Apart from it didn’t quite work out that way. We were going to barbecue the steak, but a meeting I was at overran and I didn’t get home until 7:30, and to be honest – we couldn’t face lighting the barbecue and waiting for it to be ready to cook on. So we cooked indoors (shhh, don’t tell the Argentinians!).

We made a chimichurri sauce, which was prepared using parsley, oregano, oil, garlic, onion, lemon juice, chilli flakes and some red wine vinegar.

To accompany the [now not a] barbecue we made some salads. I was dubious when ‘Russian Salad’ showed up as popular – but who am I to argue with the Internet! I also made a cucumber salad which was sliced cucumber with a little salt, and white vinegar.

The steak was skirt steak, which we bought from the butchers over at Blacker Hall Farm Shop and we just griddled the steak with a little oil.

A random bit of information that I picked up while doing my research for this is that the 29th of the month is Gnocchi day in Argentina. A day to eat gnocchi with some people putting money under plates for good luck!
