Lunch at Holbeck Ghyll

Last month we ate at Holbeck Ghyll overlooking Lake Windermere – wow, what a view!

We were seated in the lounge area for a drink and some snacks. I’m not normally a fan of truffle, but in with the cream cheese it was actually quite nice.

Snacks: Bread sticks, truffled cream cheese and olives

We were taken through to the dining room – to discover that we were the only diners in there! Another couple came in as we finished our mains and the staff tried to seat them at the table next to us – thankfully they chose to sit elsewhere!

We were given an amuse bouche of Spiced carrot with beetroot and scallop.

To start I had the Tian of crab with avocado and pink grapefruit.

Main was a Breast of Goosnargh duck with creamed cabbage and thyme jus. (I was asked how I’d like it cooked, but when I said medium – well done, it was almost frowned upon, so I said for the chef to cook it as he wanted – why ask if you’re going to disagree with what is said?). Incidentally it came medium rare and it was delicious.

I was eyeing up dessert as soon as I saw the menu – which is actually quite unusual for me. I went for the Mille-Feuilly of raspberries, raspberry sorbet, creme vanilla and raspberry sauce. This was the perfect end to the meal – not too heavy and quite refreshing.

A two course meal with a couple of pre-lunch drinks cost us £88.85.
