Christmas Dinner – City Cafe at DoubleTree by Hilton, Leeds

We visited City Cafe on Wednesday 5th December to try their Christmas dinner menu. We arrived early (6:30) and were the first ones to be seated, but the restaurant filled out nicely with a large (sometimes noisy) party at the far end.

The restaurant is on the ground floor of the DoubleTree by Hilton restaurant with views out over the canal.

I’m very much of the opinion if you’re going for Christmas dinner, you have turkey! I opted for;

Beetroot cured salmon, chive blini, potato and lemon salad

Roast Turkey with apricot and sage stuffing, roast carrot, Brussels sprouts with pancetta and chestnut, served with duck fat potatoes

Traditional Christmas pudding with brandy custard

My food was really well cooked and I enjoyed it all, but I just had a couple of issues with it;

  • There was plenty of turkey on the plate but only half a carrot and 1.5 sprouts. I would have preferred more vegetables with it
  • The Christmas pudding was nice, but with the bowl it was served in, there was barely any custard meaning the middle of the pudding was quite boring on its own
  • I think it’s unfair to make comment on the mince pies as they were clearly bought in and not the ‘mini mince pies’ as listed on the menu

The service was very polite although a little hit and miss throughout the evening.

We ordered drinks and were asked if we’d like bread and olives. Both of which we asked for. Our starters arrived before our drinks and then the olives arrived. Also, the mains were brought through on a tray to the little area in front of the till and left there while the waiter took food orders, then seated new arrivals before another waiter noticed the food sitting there and brought it over immediately. (I realise you may say he didn’t know the food was there, but the food was next to the new arrivals – surely he should have apologised to them and said he’d just be a minute and brought our food over?).

I was asked to visit City Cafe Leeds for Christmas dinner and to write my experience here.

I would be happy to return here as I felt the restaurant had a relaxed but smart feel to it, and the food was really nice. There was a bar just next to the restaurant which also had lovely views out.The Sky Lounge bar has also come highly recommended from various people on twitter.

I’ve listed the entire menu below for anyone thinking of visiting.
